MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Christchurch Girls’ High School is to provide for young women a positive and caring educational environment which encourages them to realise their creative and intellectual potential and which fosters their physical, emotional and social development.

History - Christchurch Girls' High School, established in 1877, is the second oldest girls’ secondary school in New Zealand. Today it is a modern and progressive school with a rich tradition of excellence in academic, cultural and sporting fields. Christchurch Girls' High School is set in park-like surroundings on the banks of the Avon River, in the heart of New Zealand’s garden city, Christchurch. The school moved to this beautiful site in 1986. Along with its modern facilities and state-of-the-art specialist buildings Christchurch Girls' High School has a reputation for academic excellence. This school is proud of its forward-thinking approach to educating the 1060 young women studying at Christchurch Girls' High School.

Location - Christchurch Girls' High School is in Matai Street, Riccarton, on the banks of the River Avon within walking distance of bus routes and beside the northwest cycleway. The school has been designed to take advantage of the unique beauty of the site, between Mona Vale and Hagley Park, and landscaping and tree planting have been devised to harmonise with the parks. As a result the students have a beautiful environment for work, recreation and sport.

Amenities provided when the school first moved to the site in 1986 have been extended and improved. Specialist teaching rooms now include an art block, a technology centre, computer centres, a drama room, a music technology room and music practice rooms. A gymnasium, incorporating a dance and aerobics studio, and a swimming pool are among the amenities for Physical Education. A spacious well-resourced library, with an attached computer centre, provides books and on-line information for the students and staff.

The school's proximity to the city centre enables class groups and senior students to use the rich resources of the Art Gallery and Museum, the Botanical Gardens, the Public Library and the Arts Centre as appropriate.

A school bus departs from the city centre at 8.20am daily and return buses leave from the school for the city centre at the end of the school day enabling students to take a bus connection to the suburbs. Students can study in the school library, which is open from 8.00am until 4.00pm daily, while waiting for transport connections.
