Old Girls' Association

Stained Glass Windows

The Old Girls' Association was founded in 1900 to keep alive amongst past students and staff a remembrance of the school and to foster a creative interest in its welfare. The Association has a thousand members in eleven branches throughout New Zealand. It administers the Memorial Prizes, presented to keep alive the memory of past teachers and students, and has made many other contributions to the school over the years. The latest substantial gift was an Honours Board to record the names of the Duxes of the school which was unveiled by the Governor-General, Dame Catherine Tizard, in September 1992, the 115th anniversary of the founding of the school.

"Sapientia et Veritas"

This Latin expression means Wisdom - the kind that goes beyond the book learning to knowing ourselves - and Truth.  The general sense is to aim for integrity and honesty in ourselves and towards others.

First School Crest The first school crest is hanging inside the public foyer.  It is the crest of Canterbury University College which controlled the school from 1877 to 1949.  An angel against a background of stars symbolises the institution being in the hand of God in its pursuit of knowledge and heavenly wisdom. The longest-serving Lady Principal, Miss Mary Victoria Gibson, presented this crest to the school. The school crest on your blazer pocket and inscribed into the marble wall has the symbols of Canterbury: the plough and the fleece;  the symbol of Christianity:  the stole;  and the symbol of knowledge:  the star. This has been our school crest since 1949. The words beneath the crest are Sapientia et Veritas which means Wisdom and Truth.
