Personal Excellence in Learning

Achievement in all areas of school life and the pursuit of personal goals of excellence are valued greatly by the whole school community. This climate of high expectations, and a positive attitude towards learning, creates a focussed teaching and learning atmosphere.

A wide, academic and challenging curriculum prepares students for university and other tertiary education. A special feature is the requirement for all students to take a second language for a minimum of one year. Chinese, French, German, Latin and Te Reo are taught. Classroom learning is supported by an extensive library information centre and information technology which includes full email and internet access, and a strong pastoral care programme is also provided. The many opportunities that are provided to undertake extension work stimulate an interest in life-long learning. The school also has an extensive programme of performance music.

Highly qualified and motivated staff teach the knowledge, skills and values which the students need to succeed, and to take their place in the world beyond school.

The school has a proud heritage with strong traditions and a fine reputation for excellence in all areas.

Curriculum

The curriculum offered at Christchurch Girls' High School enables every junior student to participate in the eight Learning Areas of the New Zealand Curriculum in order to gain the knowledge and understanding needed for a broad and balanced education. The Learning Areas English, Languages, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, Technology, The Arts and Health and Physical Education. They provide the context within which knowledge, skills, key competencies and values are developed.

While the programme of the juniors is dominated by the compulsory elements, the seniors put together individual programmes based on their interests and strengths and where it is appropriate are encouraged to follow multi-level courses of study.

Acceleration of the very able is a possibility and in all subjects extension is encouraged.

We prepare our students for national qualifications at Years 11, 12 and 13 and we are proud of the high standards they achieve.
