Education Beyond the Classroom

Wearable Art entry

Students can learn skills and values as well as gain knowledge and understanding by participating in group activities and by following a designed course of instruction outside the classroom.  Classes at all levels may be taken to the universities, Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, Deans Bush, the Canterbury Museum and other city locations for the purpose of research, observation and instruction.

Year 9 take part in an orientation camp at Waipara. They can also be taken to city locations as part of their learning. Year 10 participate in three day camps, tramps and cycle tours in November.

All Latin students may take part in a Cena Romana in term 4.

Year 10 Latin students undertake a study of inscriptions and visit a number of Latin inscriptions in the city.

All Geography students participate in fieldwork each year.  At Year 11 there is a 3 day field trip to the Buller region whilst at Year 12 there are 2 trips to investigate both a natural landscape and urban issues.  Year 13 students also venture out for 3 days to Franz Josef glacier.

Exchanges are arranged for students of French and German to France, Tahiti and Germany during the long vacation. Some of these are reciprocal where the French or German host sister comes to Christchurch for one or two months. A school trip is organised to France in 2010. Opportunities may arise to go with students of other schools to New Caledonia and France.

Senior Biology, Geography and Physical Education classes must fulfil practical assignments based on research done in the field.

Year 12 and 13 Art History students visit many significant buildings and art galleries in the city.  Visits to other centres are arranged to coincide with relevant exhibitions.

Year 12 Classical Studies students may make visits to the city to look at classical architecture. Year 13 Classical Studies students visit the University’s Logie Collection in conjunction with their Vase Painting topic.  A dinner is organised at a local Greek restaurant at the conclusion of the Greek part of the syllabus.

Year 13 Hospitality students complete a course run by Pernot Ricard and gain knowledge of the hospitality and viticulture industry to further their knowledge and skills.

Art, English and Economics classes and Music groups also undertake trips.

Year 12 and Year 13 students are encouraged to take STAR courses in areas of interest, seek work experience and offer their services voluntarily to the community, during the course of the year. All Year 12 students attend the annual Careers’ Expo and some attend the Work Choice Day and CPIT’s Have a Go Day.

Career oriented excursions for seniors may take place such as attending Windows to Dairying at a local farm, visiting different work places or providers and attending university lectures.

Senior Latin students undertake a trip to the rare books room at the University Library.

Students of Te Reo Māori visit maraes in Canterbury, Kaikoura or the West Coast.
