Christchurch Girls’ High School International Newsletter - December 2009

Hello and welcome to our new website and our first International Newsletter.

First things first! A big thank you to all international parents, homestays, guardians, agents and all those involved in working with our international students. Myself, the department and the girls have really appreciated your support and help throughout 2009.

And secondly, congratulations to all our senior girls who have survived the NCEA examinations! Now is the sitting and waiting time for hopefully, successful results! Remember to get on that NZQA website, put in your NSN number and fingers crossed!

Last but not definitely not least, a mention of our hard-working junior students who had the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors last week whether on school camps for the year 10’s or activity days for the year 9’s.
The main ‘point of discussion’ from the year 10’s was the very long walk which seemed to range anywhere from 6 hours to 10 hours depending on the length of ones legs I think!

A number of students are leaving us and CGHS is spreading itself far and wide! Destinations for further tertiary study include Seoul, Melbourne, Switzerland, America and the UK to name a few. A few brave students actually plan to continue their studies and life in New Zealand! Keep in touch and let us know where you finally end up!

I would like to make a special mention of our homestays who have accommodated our girls this year. It is great to hear the girls say “I love my homestay”. A good home environment has a profound, positive impact on a students learning and general happiness. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you have any concerns or enquiries regarding your homestay student. Please also feel free to contact us if you are interested in accommodating one of our students. We are always looking for homestays for 6 months, a year or longer.

It has been a busy year on the travel front with 2 trips to Thailand and Korea and one to Vietnam. It has been great to meet parents and catch them up with the progress, activities and antics of their daughters on the other side of the world. There is always a bit of shock and amusement when I present them with a photo of their daughters in a CGHS uniform! Even though you are many miles away this is a great opportunity to welcome you into our school community.

Regarding applications for 2010, we have a number of students leaving us at the end of the year and these spaces are filling fast. If you have a student who may be interested please contact us.

Finally best wishes with those NCEA results, compliments of the season and we look forward to welcoming you back next year.

Liz Stopforth,
International Dean.
