Amnesty International This is a student led group that focuses on supporting people in various countries whose human rights have been violated. We discuss the people’s plight, the countries in which they live and write letters advocating the importance of human rights for all. We also organise school action days particularly around Candle Day. Mrs Lafdal
Debating This is a good opportunity for juniors and seniors to develop leadership and public speaking skills. Students develop an ability to work in a team and construct a convincing argument. You will have the opportunity to represent the school in the Canterbury debating rounds and an inter-school debating competition. It is also possible to participate in the Junior and Senior Press Competition. In some debates the moot is given ahead of time, and in other rounds the preparation can be limited to one hour. Recently we have had students selected for the Canterbury team, National team and to represent New Zealand overseas. Information regarding debating appears on the 4th floor and in the Daily Notices. Students who are committed to debating and fostering the debating culture within Christchurch Girls’ High have the opportunity to apply for Colours. If you are a source of random information, enjoy scanning the internet and love a good argument, watch the notices for debating meeting! Miss Howard and Miss Keates
Enviro Group This is a student lead group with the aim of creating a more sustainable environment for our school. They work on projects with different people and groups within the school eg recycling, composting, native plantings, energy conservation and waste minimization. There are also inter-school projects throughout the year. All levels are welcome. Mrs Leech
International The International club is a good chance for you to meet and mix with students from a range of cultures by attending a variety of social activities and club meetings. Be a part of the committee if you want to or just be a member. The club is also involved in fund raising activities for a variety of organisations such as Red Cross. The International Club is open to all students. Ms Stopforth
Public Speaking Christchurch Girls’ High School offers a variety of public speaking opportunities, including in-school competitions and various regional and national competitions. Recently, we have had success at the Rotary Competition. If you know that you have a flair for this intellectual challenge and enjoy performing in front of an audience, why not enter? There is always a variety of topics and situations, so you will no doubt find something that suits your tastes! Ms Aman
Young New Zealanders' Challenge (Duke of Edinburgh) Awards This is a bit different from the other clubs because it is an individual challenge in which you set your own goals and work as an individual to achieve them. You can follow your own interests and choose how much time you spend. There are three awards: bronze, silver and gold and there are four sections in each one. These are service, expeditions, skills and physical recreation. You must be 14 years old to start on the Award and you can go on working up to the highest one until your 25th birthday. While you are at school Mrs Wiltshire will offer you advice and encouragement. You could do this award with a friend or solo. The programme costs $20 to join. There are about 20 juniors working for their Duke of Edinburgh Award in the school at present. Mrs Wiltshire
