Music is a traditional strength of the school which has won national recognition for its instrumental and choral performances. A team of itinerant music instrument teachers under the guidance of the Head of Department develops the strengths and talents of each student. Instruments are available for hire and tuition is free. Studios are available for practice.
Any student with an interest in music should be able to find opportunities for growth and enjoyment as a performer in one or more of the several school choirs, orchestras, ensembles, bands or chamber groups. As well as competing in the instrumental and choral competitions, students perform at charity functions and homes for the elderly, and participate in a music tour. Music is an integral part of the Annual Prizegiving and of school life.
Drumming
Twice a week the sound of enthusiastic drumming comes from a music practice room. You don’t need to have experience to turn up for a go and tuition. If you are keen there is a place for you in the school rock and jazz bands, not to mention the orchestra.

Instrumental Players
There are many opportunities for you to be part of a group. Orchestra and Concert Band are very large groups which rehearse after school on Thursday. They are open to all players and the music endeavours cater for all levels.

The Jazz Band and Saxophone Ensemble are groups who are selected by the Jazz Tutor. They rehearse one lunchtime a week. Flute Choir is open to all flute players.

Chamber Groups are small groups who mainly work towards the Chamber Music Contest in June.  Opportunities also exist for paid performances at social events outside the school. The Recorder Ensemble is for the recorder enthusiast.  This group rehearses once a week and performs at many functions. Rock Bands are for interested students. Meetings arranged to suit group members.

Do you enjoy singing?  One of these groups could be the one for you. Cantrices is an auditioned choir which rehearses twice a week at lunchtime. It has reached the National Finale (top 20) of New Zealand choirs several times, gaining Silver awards. em>Cantabile Singers  is an ‘all-comers’ choir, which rehearses once a week at lunchtime. Barbershop Quartets are close harmony singing groups.  They rehearse once a week at a convenient time.  Mrs Allison
