| General Our aim is to foster fair play and participation in sport and to emphasise enjoyment. Opportunities abound to play for form, house or school teams and leadership is often provided by senior student coaches. Students are encouraged to take part in sport by being taught the skills of swimming and athletics and games, such as basketball, softball, netball, hockey and volleyball, in Physical Education classes. The Sportfit Co-ordinator is available to design individual fitness programmes for students, who can use the weight training room and the gymnasium equipment for this purpose. |
| Athletics Athletes generally come to school already members of clubs with coaches. Senior students (athletes themselves) are able to provide coaching in track or field events if required. Participation in school sports is optional and if placed in championship events can elect to compete at inter-secondary level and if placed there, at South Island. National Champs entry is by achieving set standards. Participation in school sports is encouraged. Junior athletes in track and field qualify for a Merit Sports Colours Certificate. |
| Badminton It costs only about $10.00 to play Badminton as the racquets and shuttles are supplied by the school and the uniform is PE gear and shoes. Quite a few juniors are involved. Practices are held in the school gym at lunchtime and meetings are held once a week before the inter-secondary games on Wednesday. Travel to the venues off-site (Pioneer Stadium, Badminton Hall and other schools) is by taxi, teacher's or parent?s car. Mrs Lafdal |
| Basketball Basketball is a winter sport and is played in terms 2 and 3. Year 9's are coached by senior students and play at 4pm every Friday. Intermediate and senior teams also play on Friday nights between 5pm - 9pm at various schools and stadiums around Christchurch. There is a cost of about $40.00 to play Basketball for the season. The Senior A team has been very successful over the past 10 years, winning the Natinoal Secondary Schools' title twice. As with all sports we rely on parents to help with the Basketball programme by managing a team or if you have experience in this area coaching or refereeing. Mrs O'Brien |
| Competitive Aerobics This sport caters for all levels of ability and experience, and you can participate either as an individual, pair or as a team. Competitors can learn routines through the school or from outside coaches. There are several competitions during the year with an opportunity to compete at Nationals. The cost is about $50.00 and a high level of commitment is required. For the last 3 years this group won the Top School Award at Regionals and Nationals. Mrs O'Brien |
| Cricket This is a summer sport and is played on a Wednesday afternoon against secondary schools girls' teams. There are usually one or two practises a week in the nets at school. The school can supply equipment if you have not played before. The 1st XI also play in the New Zealand Cup National Secondary School Knockout tournament. |
| Croquet Croquet is a summer sport enjoyed by a small but loyal band of students. They go to the United Lawn Bowls Club in Hagley Park for practice/coaching on a Wednesday and compete in all inter-school fixtures. Mrs Brown |
| Cross Country/Road Race Participation in school crosscountry is compulsory for Years 9 and 10. Top 10 placegetters in each grade may elect to run in the inter-secondary competition. To compete at Nationals you must perform well at the Canterbury Champs. Outstanding and exceptional junior runners may receive a Merit (Sports) Colours Certificate. Mrs Boyd |
| Cycling The cycling team has experienced a recent growth in numbers. Keen cyclists at all levels, with any sort of bicycle are welcome. Your bike needs to be in good condition and you will need appropriate warm cycle-wear, otherwise there are no other costs. The school has a cycle top uniform. Each Wednesday in Term 2 and 3 there are races out at Halswell. Students cycle out to these events. These help maintain base fitness during the winter months for summer sports. We enter teams in the annual Litolff Cup Road Cycling race and there is a two day tour held in Blenheim each year. There are separate mountain biking events for secondary school students and they may wish to enter these events individually.Mrs Kircher |
| Dance Troup There is usually about 80 students involved with the Dance Troupe resulting in 10 groups, each ably led by senior students. They practise weekly in the Dance Studio and in classrooms for performances at Stage Challenge, Open Evening, Performing Arts Evenings and Dance Festival. |
| Equestrian Do you have a horse in need of competition? Christchurch Girls' High School has keen riders and we compete in a selection of events throughout the year. We have a One Day Event against Rangi Ruru Girls' School annually and anyone can attend this day, and enter more than one event. The inter-secondary teams are selected on ability and juniors often make the teams. Look out for the first meeting early in the year and come along. Mrs McLean |
| Fencing This is held each Wednesday after school in terms 2 and 3 at Christchurch Boys' High School. You are provided with professional coaching there if you pay your $50.00 subscription. Once you have learnt the basics, you may choose to attend tournaments held during some weekends. |
| Football Football has grown in popularity over the last few years. The 1st XI is coached by an outside coach, and the other teams are coached by senior team members and managed by staff or an interested parent. Practices are held weekly. Games are played against other secondary schools at various grounds around the city after school on Wednesday in terms 2 and 3. The First XI team participates in the satellite tournament. Uniforms are provided by school. You provide your own football boots, shin pads and red socks. Merit Certificates are awarded to outstanding junior players. |
| Golf In 2010 there is an introductory golf programme run by Canterbury Golf. The programme runs over 5 one hour sessions. The first 3 are at school, and the last two will be at a golf club near you. The cost is $30.00. If interested watch the notices at the beginning of the year. Mrs Brown |
| Gymsports This sport involves trampolining, artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics. These disciplines are taught at school at lunchtime with further practises being held in local stadiums closer to the competition. Anyone can join this club with the experienced gymnasts encouraged to coach. Students can represent the school at the Canterbury Championships in June. Mrs Warnes |
| Hockey CGHS Hockey club is administered by parents and a staff representative. Trials to select teams are held at the end of Term 1. In 2009 there were 5 teams with beginners and experienced players catered for. Juniors are eligible for and have been selected for premier and premier reserve teams some years. Our first eleven play in the National Federation cup Secondary Schools' competition and have placed highly in this the last few years. Some of the hockey teams play in both school and club competitions and games are played on week nights for school and weekends for club. There are national and regional tournaments that the teams are entered in and also school exchanges. Parents are welcome to join the CGHS hockey committee. Mrs Boyd |
| Indoor Football This is payed in Terms 1 and 4 as part of Christchurch Secondary Schools' Programme. Teams are made up of friends or from form classes. There is a cost involved - around $10.00. Games are held in school gyms and at indoor sports centres. In 2009 the school had a team entered in the Futsal competition in QEII. |
| Indoor Netball This is played in Terms 1 and 4 on Wednesdays as part of the Christchurch Secondary Sports programme. Teams are generally made up of a group of friends or form class members. Games are held at various commercial venues around Christchurch so transport is a requirement. There is a cost for this sport, generally around $15.00 per term. Ms Taiaroa |
| Lifesaving There is a long history of lifesaving success at Girls'High. Year 9 students are encouraged to qualify for the Bronze Star Award. Senior students may seek qualificatio ns as instructors, and participate in the Monica Thacker annual competitions. Badge work is carried out in the school pool and as it gets colder in covered local pools. An inter-secondary competition called the Monica Thacker Competition is held in term I for those selected for teams. Mrs Pinkney |
| Multisport A growing group of girls are competing regularly at various multisport and triathlon. Self motivation, interest and a commitment to having fun are essential factors required to take part in these events. Mrs Leech |

| Rhythmic Gymnastics Balls, hoops, ropes and music is the gear needed for this sport and we have it all in the gym. Practises are weekly and taken by senior students. Students can compete in the Canterbury Championships held in June. Mrs O'Brien |
| Rifleshooting Would you like to try target shooting? There is a CGHS rifle shooting club which meets during terms 2 and 3 on Monday nights at the Bangor Street Range which is located just off Kilmore Street (east end). The club provides equipment such as rifles, jackets and gloves which are needed for shooting. Students must supply their own hearing protection and pay for ammunition and targets. The cost is approximately $2.00 per night which covers the cost of ammunition and targets. We usually enter a team into the NZ Secondary Schools' postal competition and some members may be selected for a combined Christchurch Schools' team to shoot against Wellington schools. | Rockclimbing Girls interested in the sport of rockclimbing meet throughout the year, at the YMCA rockclimbing wall to practise and develop their skills. There is also the opportunity to compete in interschool climbing events usually held at the YMCA or the Roxx Climbing Centre. Teams participate in the annual Waitaki Exchange. Mrs Brown |
| Rowing The CGHS rowing programme is athlete focused, coach directed and parent supported. Rowing is not an easy sport. It requires commitment both in time and effort. A Learn to Row programme is offered during term 4, so that each student can work out if rowing is the sport for her at a minimum cost prior to the actual season commencement in term 4. Mrs Kissick |
| Rugby Rugby has become well established in the school since its introduction in 1999, and two teams, drawn from all levels of the school, are entered in the local competition. Players must provide their own personal equipment including a mouthguard which is compulsory for all practices and games. Practices are held weekly and are open to any girl who wishes to learn the skills of the game. Mr Lyall |
| Sailing School sailors can compete in various inter-secondary competitions when they are held. Interested students can sign up at the beginning of Term I. Miss Hornsey |
| Snowsports The school enters students in the Canterbury ski and snowboarding championships in August. Up to two ski teams and 2 snowboarding teams (4 members in a team) are selected on ability and experience from all year levels. Junior ski and snowboarding days are occasionally organised for those interested on a Sunday. |
| Softball Anyone can sign up to play softball. The teams compete on Wednesdays in the inter-secondary competition against other Christchurch schools. Uniforms are provided for some teams, otherwise PE uniform is worn. Teams practise at school, and transport is sometimes required depending on game venues. Mrs Brown |
| Squash It costs about $25.00 to join this sport and you need a squash racket (the school have some rackets you may borrow) and suitable shoes. We play at Squashways and travel there by bike on Monday after school (practice) and Wednesday after school (inter-secondary game). Juniors are able to earn a Merit Certificate for reliability and success in the sport. Mrs Brown |

| Table Tennis All the equipment for this sport is provided by the school or by the Canterbury Table Tennis Club at their stadium in Blenheim Road. PE gear is worn as uniform. For any interested students competition is on Wednesday after school against other secondary teams. Merit certificates are awarded to juniors who get into the 'A' team. Mrs Brown |
| Tennis We play tennis against other schools on Wednesdays in Terms 1 and 4. Anyone can sign up for a fee of about $5.00. Some transport is required. There is an opportunity for competitive players to compete in the Canterbury Secondary Schools? Championships in Term 4. School tennis Champs are also held, and we compete in regional and national tournaments if selected. Mrs Brown |
| Touch Touch is a fun and fast summer sport. It is a 30 minute game, played with 6 players on the field at a time with plenty of subs on the sideline!! It resembles rugby league but you touch instead of tackle. Lots of students play touch, some in competitive teams, others choose to be in social teams with their friends. All junior teams are given two members of the school Supertouch team as coaches. Games are played during terms 1 and 4 on a Wednesday, usually at Hagley Park or occasionally at other schools. All you need is your PE gear, sports shoes and a drink bottle. |
| Trampolining The school gym is the location for this sport and no special gear is required. The team practises for fun and enjoyment and also to prepare for inter-secondary competition which takes place once a year. Mrs Warnes |
| Underwater Hockey This sport has been played at CGHS for some years and has been run by a parent to date. The girls practice and play at QE II so transport is required. The teams participate in the local Christchurch competition and secondary school tournaments. Mrs Brown |
| Volleyball Volleyball is a summer sport played in terms 1 and 4 on Monday nights. Junior teams are coached by seniors and usually play at 4pm. Intermediate and senior games are later. Games are played in school gyms and also at Pioneer and Cowles stadium so transport help is appreciated. The cost is $5.00 to play volleyball. There is an opportunity for the top teams to compete in Canterbury, South Island and National tournaments. Mr Thew |
| Waterpolo Water polo is a summer sport played in terms 1 and 4. CGHS have two teams with the A team playing at Jellie Park on a Friday night and the B team playing at QEII on a Wednesday. The teams train on a Thursday morning at 7am at Jellie park which is not compulsory for the B team but encouraged. CGHS have been very successful in this sport over the last few years.
